Here's what well-known bay author Tom Horton had to say about the Voices of the Chesapeake Bay project: "Many of these voices would be lost or inaccessible, along with their wisdom, if not for this work."
The Voices concept began as a radio show, and now host and producer Michael Buckley brings us a fascinating selection of Chesapeake voices in written form. In this book you'll hear from personalities like former state senator Bernie Fowler, Chesapeake Bay Foundation scientist Bill Goldsborough, former Maryland Governor Harry Hughes, Piscataway Canoy tribal Chairwoman Mervin Savoy, Captain Buddy Harrison, and many others who's lives revolve around the bay. Taken as a whole, these accounts open windows-each with a view of the Chesapeake-through which we see diverse perspectives on history, ecology, economy, and how they intertwine with the bay and the human soul.
A limited number of unique hard-bound editions are available, and this is a beautiful, top-quality book! The spine is embossed in gold and the inside pages are printed on semi-glossy #60 opaque paper, which minimizes photograph print-through and feels sturdy between your fingers. The dust jacket features the same cover as the soft-bound version of Voices of the Chesapeake Bay, with additional text and photos on the inside flaps. This is the book to purchase if you're looking for a high-quality gift that will last for decades.
Off the Hook Rudow's Recipes for Cooking your Catch
Off the Hook - Rudow's Recipes for Cooking Your Catch is a collection of recipes from anglers and chefs around the country. Each type of fish (as well as other recreationally-harvested seafood, like crabs, clams, and bay scallops,) has recipes including Fancy Fish (restaurant-quality dishes provided by professional chefs,) Fish Camp Favorites (those that can be cooked around a campfire or grill) and Marina Mainstays (recipes appropriate for on-board cooking, discovered while walking the docks). Most of the dishes in this book were gathered by the author as he traveled on-assignment for Boating Magazine; every time he visited a new fishing camp, resort, or event, he tried to note the best of the local food and how it was prepared. At California's Lake Crowley trout opener, for example, Rudow walked the campground sampling the smells until he came upon a group of anglers grilling the day's catch in an unusual way. He then approached them, and got their recipe. More advanced recipes include a selection of favorites provided by professional chefs at the renowned Baltimore Tremonts. Other sections of the book explain proper care and cleaning of recreationally-caught fish, including a detailed chapter on proper filleting techniques. This 240-page book is available in a hard-bound 6" x 9" edition, only.
